چکیده

The two stable isotopes of hydrogen, protium (H) and deuterium (H) differ in their physicochemical nature. Deuterium-depleted water (DDW) significantly inhibited the growth rate of different tumor cell lines in culture media and xenotransplanted MDA-MB-231, MCF-7 human breast adenocarcinomas and PC-3 human prostate tumors in vivo. The apoptosis-triggering effect of DDW was demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. The anti-cancer effect of D-depletion was also confirmed in a double-blind, randomized, 4-month-long, human phase II clinical trial on prostate cancer. D-depletion, as an adjuvant, caused 3-7 fold increases of median survival time (MST) in lung cancer, twofold in advanced breast cancer and it also effectively prevented recurrences of early stage breast cancer. It is suggested that the cell cycle regulating system is able to recognize the changes in the H/H ratio. Two key events takes place in the cell at the same time: the binding of growth hormone to the receptor activates the H-transport system, which preferentially eliminates H, resulting in an increased H/H ratio, which is essential to start cell division; the properly working mitochondria, the terminal complex of mitochondrial electron transport chain reducing molecular oxygen to DDW, which reduces the H/H ratio and inhibits the cell growth. The balance between the activated Htransport system and the DDW producing mitochondria which determine the H/H ratio in the cells is proposed as the key mechanism to regulate cell growth.

The Effect of Bayesian Reasoning Training on the Results of Clinical Reasoning Tests of Interns

Introduction: Clinical reasoning includes a range of thinking about clinical medicine at all stages of patient evaluation. Bayesian theory can be used to refute or confirm differential diagnoses in the clinical reasoning process. In this way, by learning the basic mathematical language of probability in medicine, we can change our beliefs according to new evidence. The aim of this study is to i...

Comparing the Effect of Concept Mapping to Clinical Simulation on Emergency Medical Students` Clinical Decision Making

Introduction: Application of appropriate teaching techniques can increase decision-making skills in emergency settings. Considering the importance of decision-making for rescuers in prevention of deteriorating problems and maintaining patient’s safety in the first level of care, the aim of this study was to compare the effect of two educational methods (concept mapping and clinical simulation) ...

Familial Resemblance of Body Composition, Physical Activity, and Resting Metabolic Rate in Pre-School Children

Background: Although parental obesity is a well-established predisposing factor for the development of obesity, associations between regional body compositions, resting metabolic rates (RMR), and physical activity (PA) of parents and their pre-school children remain unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate parent-child correlations for total and regional body compositions, restin...

The Effect of Outcome-Based Education on Nursing Students' Clinical Competency

Introduction: Despite global acceptance of outcome-based education, few investigations are available about its effects on clinical competencies (cognitive and behavioral skills) of nursing students. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of outcome-based education on clinical competencies of nursing students compared to traditional education. Methods: In this quasi-experimental st...
